It is without a doubt that Le Puy en Velay is the cultural centre of the Haute Loire and one could not do better than to visit the region in September during the festival of the "roi de l'oiseaux" a colourful week long pagent of all things renaissance. Take the opportunity to sample medieval life and fall into Breugel painting - or his French equivalent!
Le Puy en Velay is an UNESCO world heritage site, and deservedly so. From this cultural heart of the Haut Loire the blood of culture flows out to the Haut Allier and attracts artists, writers and all manner of creative beings the world over.
Throughout the summer there are a wealth of cultural attractions in the Haut Allier. Each year at La Chaise Dieu there is a classical music festival and there were long celebrations this year for the bicentenairy of Lafayette.
Not that all this culture need be on a grand scale. Promenade in the valleys and forests and one will discover a great cuisine - take your time in the small market towns and one will notice a vibrant communtiy of artists that paint, sculpt, sing, write and celebrate life as found in the Haut Allier and the world over.
